Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Honolulu
You’re in luck if you happen to be vacationing in Honolulu during St. Patrick’s Day. The capital celebrates with a lively parade and epic block party, honoring the Irish holiday that has found its way to the Pacific.
Guests at Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel looking to partake in the annual festivities don’t have to go far to see the Waikiki St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored by Friends of St. Patrick. The parade begins at 12pm on March 17 from Fort DeRussy and heads down Kalakaua Avenue, and guests can simply step out on the bustling avenue to watch. The parade will continue along Kalakaua Avenue and end at the bandstand at Kapiolani Park.
Marching bands, community organizations, students and military groups will make up the parade of around 800 participants. It’s expected to last 90 minutes.
Following the parade is the ever-popular St. Patrick’s Day Block Party, thrown by Murphy’s Bar & Grill in Downtown Honolulu at 2 Merchant Street. The all-day affair starts as early as 12pm and runs until 9pm, featuring traditional Irish fare, vendor booths, live music, a fresh oyster bar, and of course, drinks. Entry is free! ATMs will be available onsite. After 4pm, the party is recommended for adults – children are permitted, but it’s not encouraged due to crowd sizes and the nature of the event.
If you do partake in the festivities, make sure not to drink and drive. Guests can head back to their hotel from the block party by taking The Bus from S. Hotel Street and Bethel Street to arrive at Kuhio and Paoakalani Avenues, just a short walk from Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. See route.
For on-demand transportation such as Lyft, three designated pick-up and drop-off locations will be set outside the festival.
If you’re in the mood for a more low-key evening, Tiki’s Grill & Bar will have live music starting at 1pm, as well as drink specials. See the event calendar for details.
