Hiking Diamond Head
Diamond Head trail is one of the best in Oahu, offering panoramic views atop a volcano crater estimated to be half a million years old. Can you get any more Hawaiian than that?
The summit is just over 2 miles from Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, which offers views of the breathtaking state monument, synonymous with Waikiki. Don’t just be a spectator - put on some good sneakers or hiking shoes and scale the top! Here’s all you need to know.
How long does it take to hike Diamond Head?
The hike typically takes 40 minutes to an hour, though some manage to make it in half an hour. Most stop and take photos along the way. The hike can be steep in areas, however, these areas are facilitated by stairs. The 500-foot ascent includes switchbacks, stairs, a tunnel, and as well as sweeping views from old military bunkers located at the summit.
How much does it cost?
As of summer 2018, the pedestrian fee is $1 per person and $5 per car, according to the Diamond Head State Park website, and subject to change. The park is cash-only.
When does it open?
Diamond Head is open from 6 am to 6 pm, 365 days a year, including holidays. If you’re there for a glimpse of the evening light, know that the last entrance to the hiking trail is at 4:30 pm. Rangers typically ensure that everyone is out of the park by 6 pm.
How do we get there?
If you’re traveling with more than two, a taxi is the quickest option and is comparable to bus fair. Ask our tour desk for your best option.
For public transit, you can take the bus from the corner of Kuhio and Paoakalani Avenues, two blocks east from Aston Waikiki Beach toward Diamond Head. Get off at the Diamond Head State Monument bus stop. See your route option here. As of 2018, bus fare is $2.75 - check current rates here.
The best time to go?
Diamond Head can heat up later in the day, so it’s best to go in the morning. Check sunrise times in Oahu if you want to enjoy the light of the morning hours.
When was Diamond Head’s last eruption?
Rest assured, visitors: Diamond Head hasn’t erupted in 150,000 years. Scientists believe it will remain dormant, so there’s no cause for alarm.
