Who is King Kamehameha?

King Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, united the Hawaiian islands into one royal kingdom in 1810, becoming the founder and first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i. The great warrior, diplomat, and leader is memorialized in the towering 18-foot bronze statue (pictured above) that stands across the street from ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu. Find out how the King Kamehameha statue is an active participant in the holiday’s festivities below!

When is King Kamehameha Day?

King Kamehameha Day always falls on June 11. This year, the 150th anniversary of the holiday is on a Saturday.

Why is King Kamehameha Day celebrated?

After founding the Kamehameha dynasty once he was appointed King, King Kamehameha’s descendants would one-by-one come to rule Hawai‘i. It wasn’t until under the rule of the fifth monarch, King Kamehameha V, that the national holiday was created by the king to honor and celebrate his grandfather. King Kamehameha Day history fun fact: June 11 is no arbitrary number. It has no affiliation with King Kamehameha either. The people of Hawai‘i initially wanted to honor King Kamehameha V on his birthday, December 11. Instead, Kamehameha V opted to honor his grandfather and pushed the holiday as far away from his own birthday as possible, hence June 11.

King Kamehameha Day Events 2022

King Kamehameha Day has three notable annual events that we look forward to every year. The King Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping will be held Friday, June 10 from 1 - 4 p.m. outside the Ali‘iolani Hale in downtown Honolulu (the home of the Hawai‘i State Supreme Court). Ceremonies include a performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band and a formal program with presentations and dressing the statue with beautiful 30-foot lei.

Come Saturday, all of Honolulu is ready for one of the island's most anticipated events of the year. Beginning at 9 a.m., the 105th King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade makes its way from ‘Iolani Palace in downtown to Kapi‘olani Regional Park in Waikiki. Following the parade’s conclusion at around 11:30 a.m., enjoy live music, food, vendors, and more at the King Kamehameha  Celebration Ho‘olaule‘a at the Kapi‘olani Park Bandstand until 4 p.m.
