5 Places to Hang with Animals on O‘ahu

Waikiki is always bustling with foot traffic. Busy streets, sidewalks, beaches, and parks may have you seeking some non-human company now and then. This National Family Day, which falls on Monday, September 27, take the family to see the animals that call Hawai‘i home. Whether you’re more the finned, feathered, furry, or scaly type, we’ve rounded up five places to hang with animals on O‘ahu.

Although we strive to provide the most current information, attractions mentioned may close or operate with reduced hours without notice. We recommend checking City and County of Honolulu or State of Hawai‘i mandates and individual websites for updates and social distancing measures before visiting. Please travel responsibly and follow mask requirements and social distancing procedures.

[5 Fun and Family-Friendly Attractions in Waikiki]

1. Whale Watching

Humpback whales, or kohola, migrate off the coast of Hawai‘i each year from November through May. Try your chance at spotting one of these living giants from Diamond Head or Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail, or on a whale-watching excursion, of which the island offers many.

2. Honolulu Zoo

Get up close and personal with animals from all over the world at the Honolulu Zoo. Exhibits like Primates of the World, African Savanna, and the Elephant Habitat house animals like the American alligator, Galapagos tortoise, black rhino, and cheetah. The Honolulu Zoo is located at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua Avenue, just steps from Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel.

3. Sea Life Park

Visit the marine park in Waimanalo for animal encounters, touch pools, penguin trainer talks, and 10 unique habitats and exhibits. Sea Life Park's interactive opportunities include getting up-close and personal with animals like dolphins, sea lions, sharks, Hawaiian rays, and sea turtles.

4. Waikiki Aquarium

The Waikiki Aquarium is popular among visitors, and for good reason. Recently reopened, the aquarium has fun exhibits spotlighting corals, jellyfish, and more colorful invertebrates. In addition to sharks, seahorses, and tropical fish, the green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals will all be competing for your attention.

5. Dolphin Quest

Come face to face with majestic bottlenose dolphins at Dolphin Quest in Honolulu. The aquatic adventure is designed as a memorable experience for the whole family. View, touch, and swim with the dolphins during your interactive encounter which includes personalized photos with the dolphins
