10 Ways to Beat the Summer Heat in Waikiki

Staying sheltered from the elements doesn’t have to mean staring at hotel room walls. We’ve got plenty of ideas for cool-down opportunities during a hot spell in Hawaiʻi. While outdoor swelters, stay cool at these weather-proof Waikiki destinations.

1. Do More than Window Shop at International Market Place

Don’t miss the International Market Place, one of the many shopping destinations along Waikiki’s main thoroughfare (Kalakaua Avenue). The luxury shopping center offers nearly 80 shops to spend some serious cash in (like Burberry, Banana Republic, and Michael Kors).

2. Get schooled at the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaiʻi

Learn about Hawaiʻi’s diverse military heritage with exhibits on the Vietnam War, Hawaiian warfare, and the Gallery of Heroes which honors citizens who served in the Nation’s defense. The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaiʻi is located at the historic Battery Randolph on the north end of Fort Derussy Park. Admission is free but donations are welcome.

3. Hang with the fish at the Waikiki Aquarium

See ocean life up close at the Waikiki Aquarium. The waterfront aquarium has an impressive coral farm and ‘Hunters on the Reef’ exhibit, as well as a Hawaiian monk seal habitat that is always fun for families. Want a sneak peak? Check out the aquarium’s live webcams.

4. Browse the selection at Bailey's Antiques and Aloha Shirts

No item of clothing better represents summer than the Hawaiian shirt. Bring home a vibrantly colored aloha shirt from Bailey’s to remind you of your Waikiki stay. The long-running shop has the world’s largest selection (over 15,000!).

5. Go for a swim

Luckily, there are a few ways to cool down in Waikiki that don’t involve staying inside. Escape the heat on a summer day by going for a swim. Whether taking a dip in Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel’s swimming pool overlooking Kalakaua Avenue or splashing around at the beach, the water signals your body to cool down. Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel is just steps from Kuhio Beach and provides pool towels, beach chairs, and reef-friendly sunscreen lotion and aftersun lotion.

6. Sample the local cuisine at Waikiki’s best restaurants

We love al fresco dining, but eating a delicious meal in the a/c has its benefits on a hot day. From a walking food tour of the neighborhood to finding the best poke in town, stay up to date with Waikiki’s most celebrated restaurants on our Blog.

7. Go diving with Waikiki Dive Center

Dip into the cool waters off Oʻahu with a diving course and charter from Waikiki Dive Center. Whether you’re a beginner or certified diver, the full-service center leads small diving groups to the best wrecks and reefs on the island.

8. Cool down with a local beer

There are a few places in the neighborhood to kick back with a frosty pint of our favorite warm weather brew. Check out Waikiki Brewing and Maui Brewing, both on Kalakaua Avenue. Maui Brewing’s Pineapple Mana wheat and Waikiki Brewing’s Aloha Spirit blonde ale are exceptionally thirst-quenching.

9. Watch the sunset

Now that the sun isn’t at its hottest, there is nothing nicer than witnessing one of Hawaiʻi’s magical sunsets. Watch the sun dip into the west from Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel’s third floor at Tiki’s Grill & Bar with a chilled mai tai in hand, or enjoy it right from the comfort of your own room. Rooms located poolside and those facing west have amazing sunset views; poolside rooms are also complete with full balconies. Make sure to request a poolside room while booking your stay.
